Have you heard of Jelly Drops?

A little known fact about dementia is that those with the condition struggle to drink enough water. This is due to an inability to communicate thirst and sense dehydration. Memory loss can also influence this trend in dehydration amongst seniors. Since the average senior needs approximately 13 cups of water daily, encouraging hydration can become challenging. Luckily, one creative inventor recently found a way of encouraging hydration through the consumption of a special candy.

Jelly drops— a candy with a gummy bear consistency— are the newest and tastiest ways of staying hydrated. While anyone can eat them, creator Lewis Hornby was motivated by his own grandmother Pat who struggled with dementia.

“When Pat, our founder Lewis’s grandma, was rushed to hospital with severe dehydration, he was told to prepare for the worst. Pat, who had dementia, thankfully made a full recovery, but Lewis was left wondering how something so small could have a potentially life-threatening impact. Lewis spent a month in his grandmother’s care home to try and find a solution. Consulting with doctors and speech and language therapists, he spent 18 months testing and developing the product you see today.”

The candies come in a variety of flavors— strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant, orange, lime and lemon— each sugar free and made of 95% water. While a myriad of people have enjoyed their nutritional benefits, they are marketed towards seniors with dementia. It is amazing to see how one caring grandson has managed to create a solution for the larger community.
